The Beginning of Lent

Yesterday I was thinking about it being the beginning of Lent and what I was going to give up for 40 days.  I had already planned to take pictures with my boys of our ashes.  Then I would share those pictures and my Lenten promises with you today. But one of those is going to happen and one is not...

We still took our pictures, but after the readings at last night's Ash Wednesday service I decided not to share my Lenten promises.

The Gospel was from Matthew and it said:

"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you."

"When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you."

It specifically says not to share your fastings, almsgiving, sacrifices, etc.

Instead I am going to share with you a recent conversation I had with my sister about what to do for Lent and what we think about it.  It doesn't mean it is perfect, but I really enjoyed the conversation.

When we think of Lent we think 'what am I going to give up for Lent'. That is how we approached it as children.  As we have gotten older we approach it a little differently.  These thoughts aren't anything original. They are based on our Catholic upbringing, things we have read, and the sermon from our priest last night. Melisa has no clue that I am putting this together but this is essentially what we came up with.

An example of #1 is giving up sodas which you love. Every time you crave the soda you stop and say a prayer of thanksgiving, strength to fight the craving, patience, or whatever is on your mind. Therefore this fasting is bringing you closer to God through prayer.

An example of #2 could be attending mass every Monday during Lent or attending the Stations of the Cross every Friday of Lent. Another idea is setting aside a special prayer time each day to say the rosary or some other prayer of choice.  This is choosing something extra that brings you closer to God.

An example of #3 is every night you read a book before bed.  By the time you stop reading you are so tired that you forget to pray before bed or fall asleep mid-prayer.  During Lent you could work on praying before you read or not reading as long so you still have time to pray. Another example could be giving up your late Saturday nights that cause you to oversleep or not feel like getting up for church on Sundays. This is changing your habits that pull you away from God.

The goal for Lent is not to challenge yourself to see if you can give up chocolate, Facebook, or sodas.  The goal is to reflect on your life and find ways to improve your relationship with God as we prepare for Easter.  You can choose one of these approaches or you could choose to do multiple.  I just put this together as a simple way to think about Lent and what you want to do during this Lenten season.

Let me know what you think

Weekend Recap

Friday was Casen's first speech therapy appointment and since we didn't get done until 5:30 I just picked up Rosa's on the way home.

Saturday morning we got up early and headed to Fort Worth. Kyle and I took Cooper to the gun show and we dropped Casen off with Mimi.  The gun show is always busy and not very stroller friendly.  Plus we figured Casen wouldn't love being in the stroller.  I think he enjoyed his quality time with Mimi.

Cooper did really good considering he wasn't allowed to touch anything.  He was more than happy with his candy bar reward at the end.

That afternoon Kyle did some work outside and while the kids were napping I went for a quick run.  It was super windy and it didn't go great.  It could have been worse, but definitely not close to 3 miles!

We discovered that Casen likes cole slaw this day.

They don't normally eat shirtless but Casen had made a mess with a cupcake and Cooper wanted to take his shirt off too.

Sunday I went to Mass with my sister and did grocery shopping.  We hung a couple of things on the wall and then I played with some decoration stuff I had for a gallery wall in my entry (this pic is sideways).  I didn't put it up because I want to look for some other things, but I got a cood idea.  I want to add some color to it.

We also ran to Lowe's for some things and looked at ceiling fans for the boys rooms.  With the recent warm weather we reminded that this is on our to-do list for before spring.

Sunday evening Melisa, her girls, and my mom came over to play and have dinner.  I had made pot roast in the crockpot with potatoes and carrots, deviled eggs, and chocolate chip pound cake.  Plus we heated rolls and my sister brought a salad.

Dinner was delicious and the kids had a blast playing.

Leggo My Eggo- Get Free Books

This is not a paid promotion. This is just something I came across and wanted to share.

We love waffles in our house and after a bad experience with a store brand we only buy Eggo waffles. When I bought waffles last week I saw that it said something about a free book on the box.

So Sunday I followed the instructions on the box to create a log-in and I simply picked out a book.  You can either keep the book or donate it.  I had planned to donate the book to the elementary school that my sister teaches at however when I looked on the list my boys' day-care was on it!!

The book I chose was Stone Soup.  It says it will take up to 8 weeks to get there but that is okay with me.  It is FREE!

Some Little Notes
  1. I did not have to pay shipping, but you might have to if you decide to keep the book.  I am not sure.
  2. The reward code was on the inside of the box in plain letters. Nothing fancy. I wish I had taken a picture before I threw it away to show you.
  3. We earned a free book with this big box of waffles however some of their smaller items may only get 1 point. These waffles counted as 3 and that is how many it takes for a free book.
  4. For the 0-5 age range there were about 15 books.  Not a ton to choose from, but again IT IS FREE!
I think everyone should take the time to do this if you buy any Kellogg's products with this code on it.  Even if you don't have kids you can donate it to a local school.  Or heck you can email me the code and I will redeem it if you don't want to take the time to create a log-in! Hear that family members? Send me your codes and I will redeem them for you!  I already have another box in my freezer that will be redeemed this weekend (we go through a box a week!)

Let me know if you do this or if you have any questions!

*These codes are also on Cheezits, Poptarts, Kellogg's brand cereals, granola bars, and more.

Valentine's Parties

The boys wore their Valentine's shirts (from Walmart) on Friday to school for their parties. I attempted to get pictures.

Not sure what Casen was doing but he had just helped put Ranger in his kennel.

Love these sweet boys.

I went simple for the boys valentines and just did some of our favorite treats.

For the teachers I bought these movie sized Whoppers from target and made a little card for the front with a note. Kinda cheesy, but still cute.  I had planned for the boys to color them after I put the words but neither was in the mood.  So instead I just drew hearts.

This would also be great for end of the school year gifts or teacher appreciation gifts.

Friday Favorites

Linking up for Friday Favorites

1. Cooper's current favorite thing is his rain boots. Rain, sleet, snow, or shine (is that part of the USPS motto?) this boy wants to wear his rain boots.  And personally I think it is adorable so I don't mind.

2. I am currently reading this book as part of my NY Resolutions (read here) Sometimes I crank through the pages quickly and other times it is a slow read, but overall I like it.  If I would just sit down and read for 15 minutes a day I would be done with it in no time.  I already have two other books lined up next.

3. I made myself buy a planner last week because I need to get organized.  That being said I buy one almost every year and never stick with it or just go in phases. In fact, one year my MIL got me an awesome Erin Condren planner and even then I couldn't stick with it.  So here I am trying again but at least this one only cost $7!

4. Below is the bookcase that Kyle and I (really just Kyle) painted for Cooper's nursery.  I wanted the rustic look but we somehow ended up doing crackle paint.  It turned out okay but I have never loved it.  Somehow it ended up looking yellow.

I found a friend from elementary school and she is going to redo it for us to look more like the two pictures below. Sorry I can't link back to these sources. Pinterest isn't loading at work for me.

5. He still loves his boots...

6. I got these 6 yummy cupcakes for free from a Corner Bakery promotion this week! All I had to do was buy an entrée which was no problem since Tiffany and I were eating there for lunch.

7. I came across this cute string art tutorial and thought it might be cute to do our last name.

8. Mix and Match Mama shared this easy and yummy looking recipe on her blog.  You use a blender to mix it which sounds like pure genius to me since I don't own a Kitchen-aid mixer.

9. It has been a while since we did this little activity, but yesterday Cooper randomly requested to play with his tractors in 'some dirt'.  I simply pour flour into a pan and let him get to work moving it all around.

He had so much fun and played quietly for about 30 minutes before it was time for bed.  I got to watch a show from my DVR!

10. This sweet little guy has his first speech therapy session today. I am both excited and nervous.  I can't wait for the help, but am also nervous about how he will cooperate and progress.  I just need to trust God and the therapists who have been trained for this.  Pray for me to have patience and understanding so I don't get discouraged.

I love those sweet cheeks.  He still has the baby fat and I am not ready for him to lose it.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Weekend Recap

Friday Kyle and I took the day off together.  We went to the gun range to shoot some handguns, had lunch, and ran some errands.  We picked the boys up from day-care that afternoon and tried a new Italian place in our area. The food was pretty good and the boys were surprisingly well behaved. Somehow I didn't take any pictures.

Saturday this little boy slept until after 8:30 and was found without pants.  He had pants on when he went to bed...

We had a slow start getting out of the house, but we ran to a furniture store and then came back home for lunch and naps.  When the boys woke up from nap we met Mimi and Grandpa at the park to play.

The park was very busy so we had to get on the swings as fast as possible. Then we headed to the pond to feed the ducks.  Unfortunately there were only two ducks and they were overfed with bread floating all around.

We still threw them the bread and barely missed Cooper going for a swim.  Mimi caught him just in time.

We found a second park that wasn't nearly as busy.

Grandpa took Casen up really high.

Bahaha look at his face! Susan and I couldn't stop laughing at his face!

All this time Cooper and Kyle went on a walk to look for more ducks...no luck.

Fearless Casen enjoyed his time with Mimi and Grandpa

After the park we went to dinner and then went home to open our Valentine's goodies from Aunt Shari and Uncle Ron, Mimi and Grandpa, and Nana and Papa.

Sunday morning I went to early mass by myself.  Then around 11 we loaded up and headed to Ennis.

The Gator made it's first trip to Ennis.

Little brother with his pathetic hat went for a ride but decided he would rather play with a shovel in the gravel.

Cooper then went with Kyle and Grandaddy to do some work.  They didn't take any pictures.

Casen went with mom and I to a KJZT meeting.  Casen and his cousin Marley wearing their first KJZT shirts.  They are about 7 weeks apart in age.

Then they did their first KJZT craft of decorating bags with goodies for some people in nursing homes.

He went from concentrating on his stickers, to check to see what I was doing, to smiling for the camera.  I love this little cheeseball. And he was so good at the meeting even though he didn't get a nap.

It helps that he won a door prize!

Then we headed to Granny and Papa's for a visit.  Casen helped Papa get the garden ready for spring.

Granny even found his a tool

Later we played some games, played with the puppy, and had dinner.

We had a great weekend and really took advantage of the gorgeous weather!
