First week

Here are pictures from our first week at home with Casen.
Just like his brother, Casen loves to sleep on his side.  Unfortunately Casen also love to sleep right up against the side of his bassinet.  Seriously his face will be touching the pad and it makes me so nervous!

I love this sweet face!

A lot of the pictures I take are dark because we are in the living room and I don't turn on the overhead light.

Cooper holding Casen when he got home from day-care one day.  Cooper loves to hold Casen but it literally only last 5 seconds or less and then he says he is all done. He often asks to kiss Casen or pats/rubs his head.

He is showing me Casen's nose.

That Friday we dropped Cooper off together before heading to Casen's dr appt.  Cooper was such a big boy walking in with Daddy.

At his doctor's appointment.

Cooper checking on Casen another day when he got home.

Such sweet boys

Casen's first spit bath since at this point he still had his circumcision ring.

How are we doing?

We are doing really well but still adjusting.

My recovery this time was so much better than it was with Cooper.  Though still very sore I was actually able to get up and was ready to go home as soon as we could.  With Cooper I didn't even want to get out of the hospital bed for the first 24 hours.

Despite feeling better Kyle still handled most of Casen's care as far as changing him, swaddling him, and getting him in and out of the bassinet thing.  He would give him to me for each feeding and then take him back.  Again because we were only in the hospital for 24 hours Kyle didn't have to do as much either.

We did send Casen to the nursery for about 3-4 hours overnight after I fed him.  Casen did a little bit of gagging due to swallowing amniotic fluid and the constant noises made it hard for Kyle and I to rest.  I decided that it would be better for the nurses to watch him and allow us to sleep.

Casen latched great from the beginning and has been a great nurser.  In the beginning with Cooper he never seemed satisfied with just the colostrum until my milk came in therefore we gave him a little formula with a medicine dropper in the beginning.  Casen however seemed perfectly satisfied with what he got from me and never needed formula.

My milk came in Thursday afternoon and Casen has done great since then.  He does spit up quite a bit but since he is gaining weight fine we aren't concerned.

Casen went to the doctor at 3 days old and his weight was 7lbs 4oz (it was 7lbs 11oz at birth).  We went to the doctor on yesterday for his 2 week appointment and he was up to 8lbs 1.8oz and 21 inches long now.  His umbilical cord is finally off as well as his circumcision ring so he is cleared for a real bath.  I am going to give him one today and I will take pictures.

I am healing well and as I said before it has been much easier this go round.  I am still sore at times but no complications.  My only complaint is getting used to the curves (aka big boobs) that come with being a nursing momma.  I hated them with Cooper and I hate them again with Casen.  My clothes don't fit the same and I just feel very self conscious.

Kyle is doing great as a daddy of two but this time most of his time focuses on Cooper.  It is just easier at this point for him to handle Cooper and I handle Casen.

Since my recovery was easier this time and Kyle lacked vacation time he went back to work on that Wednesday. My mom stayed one night with us as well but it has been very different from the first time. Luckily I feel more confident this time so it hasn't been a big deal.

And of course how is big brother doing? Overall Cooper is doing great.  He is his normal busy self.  He is sweet with Casen and likes to give him kisses but isn't overly interested in him.  Cooper still likes to do his own thing and plays each evening like usual.  He has been whinier and more needy than normal but that was to be expected.  There are times when he gets jealous when I am nursing Casen or trying to get Casen to sleep.  I try to explain to him that we take turns and his turn is next.  Plus Kyle usually jumps in and helps Cooper or preoccupied him until I am done.

I try to make the most of my time with Cooper when Casen is sleeping in the evenings.  I play games on the floor with Cooper or let me him help with dinner.  It really is the same as before just trying to find a balance.  There are times when I get frustrated because both boys want/need me at the same time.  I don't want to always pick Casen, but remind myself that it is temporary and will get better soon.

We are all adjusting to life as a family of four.  There are definitely challenging times, but overall we are all doing great.  We love Casen so much and can't believe it has only been two weeks.  It seems like he has always been here.

I am so blessed to have to amazing little boys and an amazing husband!

Going Home

Kyle and I knew that we wanted to go home from the hospital as soon as they would let us.  Since Casen was born before 5pm and there were no complications for either of us they allowed us to go home Tuesday afternoon.

Here is a picture of our boy that morning.

Getting his diaper changed by daddy.

Waiting to be discharged.

Loaded up and ready to go.

Casen slept the entire drive home which was nice because Cooper screamed the entire time.

This was just a random picture of me cuddling with my boy.

Just Born

or a week...

Casen was actually already a week old when I took these pictures, but whatever.

Here he is in his new chair for his monthly pictures.  Big brother Cooper loves Casen's chair!!

Of course  have cute pictures but like below he had spit up on his face.

Not looking very happy

He looks so chubby in these pictures.  I love chubby babies but I don't think he is that chubby in person. I can't wait to see what his weight is at is appointment on Monday.  At his 3 day checkup he was down to 7lbs 4oz but my milk had just come in the day before.

This was my favorite. Love this sweet boy so much.

LOVE THIS PICTURE! My heart melts with this two sweet boys!

The next day Cooper put his big brother shirt back on and Casen wore his little brother shirt.  Cooper did not want to hold Casen so we had to improvise.

Sweet little brother

Please excuse the mascara under my eye.  I didn't know it was there.

Casen's Birth Story

On Sunday the 2nd we spent the day in Ennis and I was very busy.  I had contractions throughout the day but they wouldn't stay consistent.  As I mentioned previously on the way home I got flamin hot fritos because I was craving them and hoping that they would induce labor.  I ate them but it didn't seem to matter.

I went to bed that night having inconsistent contractions.  I woke up throughout the night from them but was able to go back to sleep.  Around 6:00 that morning I finally got out of bed and started timing them and noticed that they were only 3-5 minutes apart.  I continued to get ready for work but these contractions were so painful (the same intensity as when I had the false alarm).  I took a bath, ate a granola bar, did my hair and makeup, and let work know that I might be in later.  I told Kyle that I would take Cooper to day-care but if the contractions stayed like this then there was no way I could go to work. Kyle wasn't sure if he should go to work or not.  I told him he shouldn't because I thought that this was really 'it' but due to his limited time off he decided to head to work anyways.  I told Kyle that I would continue to time them and if after an hour they didn't slow down then we would need to head to the hospital.

Sure enough I called Kyle at 7:00am (just as he got to work) saying that it had been an hour and they were still very intense.  I told him he needed to come home because there was no way I could drive Cooper to day-care.  I knew that if I had to wait for Kyle, take Cooper, and then get to the hospital that it would be a while (and I was still afraid of having this baby on the side of the highway because I waited to long).

We dropped Cooper off quickly and I continued to have very strong and uncomfortable contractions.  I could not wait to get to the hospital but hated knowing all of the questions I would have to answer before being checked and even more hoopla before I could get an epidural.  Yes, I was already ready for the epidural.  I don't remember feeling that way with Cooper, but these contractions were so painful that I couldn't wait!

We got to the hospital at 8:30am and went to triage to be monitored and check for progress. At 9:15 they checked me.  I was dilated 4-5cm 60% thinned and Casen was at a -2 station.  They confirmed that this was officially it and admitted me.  I sent the text to our parents letting them know that this was it and they could come to the hospital whenever they were ready.  We had already given them a heads up that we were going to the hospital, but we suggested they wait and see if I actually got admitted.  The nurse in triage was very sweet but when she got my IV started she messed up my right side and it hurt really bad.  Unfortunately her attempt was during a contraction and that might have been the reason it messed up.  The second attempt was successful but also painful.

At 10:45 I got my epidural.  It was painful to get but most of the fear I had was trying to stay relaxed so they could do it right the first time.  It definitely didn't help that I had my strongest contraction on the monitor right as he was doing the epidural.  It isn't easy trying to stay relaxed, calm, and still during a strong contraction.  I seemed to have poorly timed contractions!

At 11:00 Dr Glenn came to check me.  She was on call for Dr. Atkins and was amazing.  I really liked her.  She determined I was at a 5-6cm, 90% thinned and at station -1. She went ahead and broke my water.

Sometime after that the guys (Kyle, my dad, and his dad) went to grab lunch.  While they were gone Casen's heart rate started acting up so I had to be put on oxygen.  I had to be on oxygen with Cooper and it is so annoying.  Plus I was afraid to move much in the bed because once we found a position that Casen liked I didn't want to make him unhappy.

At 12:45 I was checked again and was at an 8 and Casen was still at a -1 station.

2:15- I had them check me because I felt a lot of pressure.  Sure enough I was at a 10 and 100% thinned.  Casen was still at a -1 but they thought a couple of pushes would get in to a 0.  At this point I was still on oxygen because of Casen's heart rate.

At 2:30 they decided that I was ready to push as soon as the doctor got there.

I did a few practice pushes that seemed to be good but at 2:50 when the doctor got there she determined that Casen was facing up instead of down.  She decided to have me change positions and see if he would flip around.

30 minutes later they decided it was time to push again.  Unfortunately now Casen's heart rate was really acting up due to my low blood pressure.  After about 4 sets of pushes they had the anesthesiologist come and give me some sort of 'booster' to get my blood pressure under control.  They said my blood pressure was causing distress on Casen. The epidural was doing it's job through all of this.  I wasn't feeling any pain.

The booster kicked in and it was time to push again.  I did about 7 sets of pushes and Casen was here!! He had a pretty bad cone ahead but instantly I was in love and I couldn't help but say 'aww he is so pretty!'  Dr. Glenn offered to let Kyle cut the cord and then offered to me.  We both declined.  Right away Casen was put on my chest and they wiped him off right there and examined him.  It was amazing to bond with him instantly.  I didn't get that with Cooper.  I couldn't help but cry at my amazing little boy.  I remember looking at Kyle and saying 'we are parents to two boys'.  Casen started crying at one point and I literally got to see him shed his first tear.  It truly was an amazing experience with him.

I was curious how much he weighed and was shocked when they said 7lbs 11oz.

I got to nurse right away and he did awesome.  He was a champion nurser from the beginning.  Casen never left the room and it was just such a different situation than with Cooper.

I have tons of pictures of the family meeting our sweet boy.  These are all from my iphone or someone else's.  I will share lots of pictures soon.

We are absolutely in love with our second baby boy.  I will do a post soon on how we are all doing and adapting as a family of 4!
